Shore Gate Golf Club
is among the newer courses at the
Jersey Shore, Shore Gate has quickly developed a reputation for
excellence, earning status as “#2 Public Course in New
Jersey” by Golf Digest, 2006-2007. Carved from 245 acres of
pristine forest, only a few miles from the ocean and just south
of Atlantic City, Shore Gate Golf Club serves up a unique
combination of parkland and links elements in a dramatic
sculptured, undulating landscape. Itâs an enjoyable and
formidable challenge to golfers of every level. Designed by the
world renowned Fream & Dale Golf Course Architects of Santa
Rosa, California. Fream, a veteran California based architect
whose courses are located in some 60 countries, let out all the
stops in designing this, his first East Coast course, and he
took great care to preserve the wetlands and other natural
endowments of the untouched parcel which once sat adjacent to
the Atlantic Ocean. Pines, oaks, maple, holly and laurel
beautifully frame the entire course. Seven lakes, 88 bunkers,
vertical dunes and ocean breezes offer additional visual and
strategic elements that put a premium on accuracy. The course
features five sets of tee markers on each hole, enabling all
players to custom design the Shore Gate experience according to
ability. Total yardage ranges from 5,200 to 7,227. In addition
to its recent statewide honor, Shore Gate was named among the 10
“Best New Upscale Public
Courses” by Golf Digest and earned a
place on GOLF Magazineâs list of
“Top 10 You Can Play”. Put Shore Gate on your list to
play!

Wow!, that’s what I said to myself
the first time I played Shore Gate. If you take a closer look at
the slope and course rating you will realize it’s level of
difficulty, this is one of the most demanding golf courses in
the Atlantic City area / South Jersey. However, it’s a
golf course that you must put on your list, it’s ranked #2 in
the State of NJ by Golf Digest. The course conditions are
always perfect, be prepared to 3 putt once in while on the large
undulating greens. Who new that Atlantic City has this
many great golf courses? Say hello to Harry Bittner and
tell him the AC Hotel Experts sent you! |

Shore Gate is located near the Ocean and Beaches, but
sure isnât a day at the beach. “Weâve had about 90,000 rounds
here and nobody has broken par from any tee box,” said head
professional David Faught. “We even hosted a Player Ability Test
for PGA professional hopefuls from the white tees and the low
round was 74.
“What makes the course challenging is the diversity of the golf
holes,” continues, Faught. “Everything is visually intimidating.
You canât get a rhythm or feel on this course because the holes
are so different. If youâre used to right-to-left shots the next
hole is left-to-right. Then thereâs a lay-up hole. Then thereâs
a long hole. You have to be able to place the ball exactly where
you want it. So, course management is the quintessential point
of playing here. If youâre not disciplined enough to use course
management, you wonât score well here.”
Unless you frequent California or 60 other countries outside the
United States, you might never have the opportunity to play a
Ron Fream design. Fream is known for his dramatic, memorable
layouts and Shore Gate is no exception. Included in this
parkland-style course are 180 sand areas, some up to 10 feet
deep and often located on the outside of the mounds that line
the holes. Instead of one or two signature holes, Faught says
there are, “eighteen totally distinctive golf holes,” yet the
648-yard, par 5 ninth hole at Shore Gate Golf Club in Ocean
View, NJ receives a good deal of attention.
Like the ninth hole at Shore Gate, Faught says people play here because it “beats
them up.” “The first time they play here their reaction is,
‘what just happened?â” But itâs so picturesque and serene that
they donât complain too much about how bad their score is. To
me, as a golf professional, that is very unusual.” |
