Boardwalk Empire: Another HBO Hit?

Boardwalk Empire Atlantic City - HBO 9pm SundaysThe highly anticipated HBO series, Boardwalk Empire starring Steve Buscemi, premiered on September 19, 2010. The show is based on Nelson Johnson’s book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City. Taking place during 1920’s prohibition America, the shows main theme is the rise and development of organized crime and portrays real life mobsters such as Al Capone played by actor Stephen Graham.  Official Boardwalk Empire Site <Click Here>

The show’s pilot focused on Steve Buscemi’s character, Nucky Thompson. Thompson is Atlantic City’s undisputed leader who lives a double life acting as a high standing city politician while also playing a high role in the mobster scene controlling the Atlantic City casinos.

At the Atlantic City boardwalk where the most popular recreational activities include alcohol consumption, gambling, and prostitution, the law of prohibition backfires and only opening bigger doors for illegal activity. The shows pilot takes place the night before prohibition is enforced and Nucky Thompson and the other big time mobsters have already started organizing their underground bootlegging business.

Terence Winter, producer of The Sopranos, adapted the screen play and collaborated with the show’s pilot director and executive producer, Martin Scorsese, to develop the shows look and production. Scorsese will continue creative involvement with the show after and is rumored to be directing more episodes after the pilot.

So what are HBO fans saying about Boardwalk Empire? After the shows70 minute premiere, HBO left their fans were thinking “They did it again”. With the shows elaborate sets and of course the incomparable directorial style of Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire left fans wanting more. Critics gave a hefty nod to the historic accuracy the show portrayed, comparing it to another historic hit show aired on AMC, Mad Men.

Andrew Wallenstein of the Hollywood Reporter said, “As in "Mad Men," there are plenty of small scenes depicting antiquated ways of yore that make you chuckle at how people lived during the 1920s”.
